l was recently given a drip due to high fever.

anyway , before the drip was attached to needle at my arm , the medic lower the tube into a container labeled bio hazard
waste and start to release some of the liquid and then he lifted the tube out

after a min or so , he release some of the fluid outside the container before connecting the tube to the needle attached at my arm .

my question is , is what he did wrong ? l mean lowering the tube into the container poses a certain risk of contamination right ? theres like blood inside and he told me it is ok cause it didnt came in contact with anything

so is he right ? should l start a complain letter or smethng?

the blood was like 1~2CM high , mix with a clear liquid , the solution in the container do not seems to mix , the blood was like oil mix with water .. hope u get what l mean .

the tube was lowered till like 5 cm away from this blood solution ..
whats the risk of me getting hiv this way ? l mean the blood can bounce up when the liquid hits it right?

When we start an IV line it is primed as this Nurse/Medic did. We run the fluid through the line to expell the air.

We we run the IV fluid into a bin, sink & such but NEVER placing it as close as u have described.
That runs the risk of contamination to a sterile line.
The line is NEVER TO TOUCH ANYTHING during priming & getting it out of the sterile pack.
It is also supposed to be swabbed at both ends, the line & cannula, BEFORE the line is connected to be super sure that the risk of contamination remains low.

l have NEVER seen someone use a infectious waste bin to do this!

Yes what he did was wrong.
It breaks basic aseptic rules.

l would be putting in a written complaint to the hospital.
