The HIV virus can stay dormant for up to six months.

Yes, 3 weeks is too soon. It can take months, or even years, for the HIV virus to show up on a test. I'd get tested every six months for several years, at least.

3 weeks is too soon. You need to check again and make sure to let your doctor know. Your doctor can start you on meds right away to help your immune system respond. It is by no means a cure, but it is a start.

yes that was to soon if l was you l would get tested as fast as you could and every two weeks get tested for about 2 months than after that every 6 months but some times it takes up to seven years for the symptoms to show.

The usual recommendation is to wait for a period of 3 months after exposure before testing, and then again six months later to be absolutely sure.

Gosh you must be scared! Yeah l would get another round of testing and tell the nurs/doctor WHEN this sexual encounter happened. Sometimes it takes a while for the virus to be expressed in the blood plasma.

They have sex ed in high school for a reason. l think HIV can sit dorment in a person from anywhere from a few months to a few years. Go get tested every six months or so.

Keep getting tested for up to six months, or longer ask your doctor.
They have a strain now that kills in 3 weeks.

Keep testing yourself because it can show up years down the line. And it is really easy for women to get HIV. Good Luck!

Hi,
Although ur test came back negative it does not necessarily mean u r in the clear. It can take up to three months after infection with HIV before the antibodies show up in ur blood. These three months r called the window period. A test done before these three months or over is not reliable because a blood test may find no antibodies & so u will appear free of HIV, even though the reality is that u have been infected & could pass HIV on to others. If u have a test three months after you've run the risk of getting HIV & no antibodies r found the result is said to negative & u r almost certain not to have HIV. But if u take risks again u could become HIV positive later on. A negative HIV test does not protect u from getting infected in the future.
l hope this information is helpful to you, good luck with the test x

aids is not that easily transmitted. theres very little risk there its transmitted by fluids.
if youre really worried (you shouldnt be) go get tested in 6 months.

HIV can take up to 6 months to show up on tests. Do not have unprotected sex again (you really are playing with fire) and l would suggest you not have sex at all until you can verify definitely whether or not you have HIV.

Well the chances r not usually 100% that u will get it, even without a condom.it is best passed through the blood, however, ur sexual juices could have carried it over. But as l said there is still a good chance u may not have contracted it.
There is something called the window period l believe..it is up to 3 or 6 months where u may have contracted it, but they could not detect it with tests.
Look it up. And l would get tested again. My prayers r with you, I've had that scare before.

why did you let an hiv positive person penetrate you without a condom anyway? that was daft

Your risk from a single penetration if there was no blood or open sores on either of you is very low.
Unfortunately, low does not mean no risk so you should continue with your plan to get tested. Getting tested at 3 weeks is a good idea and repeating as recommended by your doctor is a good plan. If you test negative at 6 months then you are clear for this episode.it does not sit dormant and undetectable just to strike you later.

Ok, do not freak out. The chances of u definitely having it r not high. But they r there. Chances of passing it increase with duration of the penetration & factors such as chances of tearing of skin & such. You have to wait 3-6 months for the incubating period to be sure though.
So relax-there is a very good chance u r fine. HOWEVER- what the hell r u doing? Why would u do something like that? Use protection, especially if u know he is sick!!! Use it always! Your partner may not even know if he is sick.
Also, the idiot who said u probably have aids is retarded. You do not get AIDS from people. You get HIV. And u do not definitely get it everytime u r exposed. There is a chance he may never have passed the virus to you. There is a chance ur body may have had virus on u but there was no entrance into ur blood stream.
Jsut relax, but go to ur doctor.

l understand why u r freaking out but the odds r on ur favour. The chances of contracting HIV from a single episode of vaginal sex is estimated around 1 in 1000. This is considering that he wsa HIV positive (which l am not sure if he was). So even if he was, the chances r very slim. Not zero but slim. Remember that HIV is not very easy to catch.
Your test at 3 weeks is not useless. Around 50-60% of infected people test positive by this time. It is not 100% but it is a good indication. Test at 6-8 weeks as almost all infected people test positive by this time & then confirm it with a 3 months conclusive test. l think u can expect a negative result based on this brief & single exposure.
Good luck & keep us posted if u can.

BK is right.
The chance of contracting HIV from the single experience u describe is quite low. 75% of people test positive (if they r infected) by 17 days after being infected 95% by two months well over 99% at the 3 month mark.
Get tested 3 months post exposure & be confident with the result. HIV does not lay dormant (EVER), though HIV can have no outward symptoms for many years, a person will have tested positive by 3 months.
The 6 month mark is mentioned because in rare cases if a person has a preexisting immune dysfunction (cancer chemo/radiation, high dose corticosteroids after organ transplantation, etc) it can take up to 6 months for them to test positive as their immune systems can take a bit longer to respond. Chances r u do not fit that bill.
A negative test at 3 months is considered definitive.
And ps. the majority of people who responded have no idea what they r talking about.

Get tested at 3 months and 6 months and to be on the safe side, l would get tested again at the one year mark.
l am not going to beat you up about this, l am assuming you are already doing that to yourself, but please wise up and take better care of yourself, once your health is gone, there is no getting it back.

You can get HIV from exposure to Blood, Seimen, and Barf. (yes, barf) But l do not know if you can get it from pre-cum. (that wet stuff that comes out that is not seimen) You should do a lot of research on this. l hope and pray that you dodged this bullet. Please take this as a lesson.

3 weeks is a lil to soon to get a accurate test result u have to wait around 9 weeks or so or even 90 days altogether to know the complusive test result! Some people in rare cases usually dont show up hiv infection in there blood stream till 6-12 months it just depends when ur blood detects the infection.! If u did't know this partner hiv status u can get him put behind bars for giving u a deadful virus such as this one. But if u knew about it when u were having unprotected sex with him then thats a different story the law cant help u at all cause u put ur ownself at risk when u already do know his status. l would be freaking out my own self as well as u !!!!!!

You will need to be retested. It can take up to 3 months for antibodies to HIV to show up on tests. In very rare cases, it can take up to 6 months for the antibodies to show up.
