If u have a cold sore, u should not share a glass, straw, toothbrush, lipstick, or any other makeup with anyone else. Anything that goes into ur mouth or around ur mouth can harbor the virus long enough to spread it. Kissing - yep, spreads it. Oral sex when u have a cold sore - yep, spreads it to ur partner is genitals.

If u get cold sores often, you're familiar with that burning, tingly feeling u get in ur lips starting a few days before the blister appears. Virologists used to believe that until u had that burning & tingling, the virus was dormant & could not be spread. In the last few years, they have discovered that by the time u get the burning & tingling, u have been contagious & spreading the virus for DAYS.

It is very possible to transmit the cold sore virus that way. However, keep in mind that many of us already have the cold sore virus dormant in our bodies, & never have a flare up of cold sores. We contracted it as children, as it is a very common virus, & children pick it up easily as they often share food & drinks, & may be less concerned about hand washing & hygiene. The absolute best treatment for cold sores is a prescription medication in pill form called Valtrex. It was intended for genital herpes, but cold sores r caused by the same family of viruses, & Valtrex stops colds sores in their tracks. None of the other treatments come close to the effectiveness of Valtrex, not the ointment Zovirax, & certainly not Abreva or anything else. Ask ur doctor about it to see if u would be a good candidate for this medication. My doctor prescribed it for me for cold sores about five years ago & after taking it only a couple of times l hardly ever get a cold sore any more, & before Valtrex l was having several attacks a year.
