The HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) virus is a non-lethal virus which lays dormant in the system until it develops into full-blown AIDS. Occasionally, it will never turn into AIDS, & the person will be completely fine. The time is takes to change is relatively random.
AIDS (Auto Immuno Deficiency Syndrone) too is non-lethal; what it does is weaken ur body is immune system to the point where many common, easily curable diseases (i.e. pneumonia) can kill it. Technically speaking, it lowers ur T cell count, which r the part of ur immune system that fights invading viruses & bacteria.

HIV is a virus that damages ur immune system by destroying Tcells, the cells that our bodies use to fight infections. Once the Tcell count drops to 200 or below, a person is diagnosis changes from HIV to AIDS. By that time, the body is unable to fight off other infections, & the person could die from a cold, flu, pneumonia, or other infection. A person with a healthy immune system would have no problems fighting off those infections, but a person with AIDS could die from those infections. Technically, people do not die of HIV or AIDS, they die from other infections they get due to their damaged immune system.
